Join us this year for one full week of national and international slam poetry competitions. Over 100 poets from around the world will converge on Belleville and compete for both the World Cup of Slam as well as the French National Grand Slam titles. In addition, numerous events and readings will take place throughout the week. Paris Lit Up is the proud organizer of the following events:*

Carl Watson & Yann Rousselot

For one night only, internationally renowned poet and novelist Carl Watson and Inkshares author Yann Rousselot will take to the stage of Culture Rapide on Saturday, June 6th at 17h30 for an evening of poetry and spoken word. Hosted by the wild and rambunctious Jason Francis Mc Gimsey. Be sure to come early for a good spot as space is limited.

Carl Watson is a poet, fiction writer, playwright and critic. He grew up in Northwest Indiana and has since lived in Portland Oregon, New Orleans, Chicago, New York and Paris and teaches literature in the CUNY system, most recently at Baruch College.. Watson has written cultural criticism and reviews for various journals including The Village Voice, NY Press, Downtown, Tribes, and The Williamsburg Observer. He is the author of several books of fiction, including Bricolage ex Machina (Lost Modern Press), Beneath the Empire of the Birds (Apathy Press), The Hotel of Irrevocable Acts (Autonomedia), and most recently Backwards the Drowned Go Dreaming, a novel published by Sensitive Skin Books. He has also published several collections of poetry, including Anarcadium Pan (Erie Street Press), Living for the Ecstasy Sect, Confessions of an Aspirin Eater, The Green Man (Apathy). His latest collection, Astral Botanica, is published by Fly by Night Press, the imprint of A Gathering of the Tribes. In 2012 he received the Kathy Acker Award for Fiction. The novel Hotel des acts irrevocables and the short story collections Sous l’empire des oiseaux and la vie psychosomatique have been published in France by Gallimard, and vagabonde, respectively. Vagabonde press will publish the novel Backwards the Drowned Go Dreaming next year.

Yann RousselotYann Rousselot is a translator, writer, and poet. He grew up in airport lounges and diplomatic enclaves with his brothers, his sister, and countless cheap suitcases, raised across the globe by humanitarian parents. He has been published in Paris Lit Up Magazine, The Bastille, AUP’s Paris/Atlantic Magazine, Thought Catalog, and the Belleville Park Pages. He lives, writes, and performs spoken word poetry in his adoptive city of Paris. Dawn of the Algorithm, Yann Rousselot’s debut collection of poetry, is a bestiary of octosharks and dinosaurs, zombies and pathogens, mecha robots and common mortals. These monsters were raised on a diet of TV tropes, movie clichés, book snippets, and video game storylines. Some have beating hearts, others interlocking mechanical parts. They are forces of human nature, genetically engineered with a single purpose: to herald the apocalypse. Building on user-friendly motif and imagery, Rousselot draws acute, playful but painful conclusions about twenty-first century Earth. He paints a darkly comical portrait of humankind, a species plagued by heartbreak and alienation, yet driven by hope and, at the very core, a burning desire to connect.
