Multilingual Writing / Écriture Plurilingue

February 7 @ 7:00 pm - February 28 @ 8:00 pm

Take part in a seminar / workshop on the technical and social aspects of multilingual writing in any combination of languages, including invented ones. We will talk about untranslatability, linguistic materiality, etymology, and punning, and also about potential readerships and the subversion of political and linguistic nationalisms.

We will try to develop a critical vocabulary for aspects of multilingual writing, probably with some attention to the terminology of Russian Formalism. Translators, untranslators, language-attentive poets, writers, and readers especially welcome. The seminar will be led by Eugene Ostashevsky, award-winning translator and poet, as well as professor at NYU-Paris. Right now he thinks we’ll start by reading Rabelais.
