PLU Open Mic featuring Dr. Monique Wells

July 14, 2016 @ 8:00 pm - 11:30 pm

Free

Paris Lit Up welcomes Dr. Monique Wells as our featured performer on July 14! Come, listen, be inspired, join our open mic, then head off into the evening to watch the Bastille Day fireworks (Belleville has a great view…). Sign-up starts at 8pm, for an 8.30/45pm start.

Dr. Monique Y. Wells is a fervent believer in the power of education to change lives. She has combined her passion for life sciences, literacy, STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics), the Arts, study abroad, and women’s empowerment under the umbrella of her non-profit organization, the Wells International Foundation (WIF).

As co-founder of the Discover Paris! travel planning service, Dr. Wells has worked with study abroad groups across the United States since 2001. Her most recent venture (Jan-Feb 2016) brought students from the University of Arizona to Paris to work on a project that supported WIF’s inaugural event: an art exhibition entitled Beauford Delaney: Resonance of Form and Vibration of Color and an associated STEAM education initiative for K-12 teachers from the United States.

Dr. Wells is a long-standing member of the African-American community in Paris and she has included the Arts as a Strategic Focus Area for WIF because of her passion for promoting the legacy of Beauford Delaney. As president of the French non-profit association Les Amis de Beauford Delaney, she has spearheaded several successful projects over the years. These include the preservation of Beauford’s gravesite, inclusion of his gravesite on the celebrity list at Thiais Cemetery, and installation of two commemorative plaques in his honor – one at the Hôtel Le M, the other at the Hôtel Odessa. Both sites are located in Montparnasse, the area where Beauford lived during most of his Paris years. Les Amis partnered with WIF to bring the Resonance of Form and Vibration of Color exhibition to Paris.

Dr. Wells recently spoke at the International Conference on James Baldwin held at the American University of Paris. She gave a presentation entitled “Beauford and Baldwin: Paris Stomping Grounds.”
