Poetry Reading with Mariela Griffor and Stephanie Papa

Mariela Griffor, based in Michigan and Washington D.C., will be reading from her new translation of Pablo Neruda’s famous work, CANTO GENERAL: SONG OF THE AMERICAS, recently published by Tupelo Press.

Paris-based writer Stephanie Papa will also be reading from her original work, and join Mariela in conversation about translation and Latin American writing, followed by a Q&A. (And refreshments!)

Tupelo Press on Canto General:
“In his most audacious and ambitious achievement, Neruda depicts history as a vast, continuous struggle against oppression. Constructed in fifteen parts, and made up of more than fifteen thousand lines, Canto General unfolds in successive epochs, celebrating the flora and fauna and geology of Neruda’s homeland and recounting episodes in the lives of explorers and conquistadors, emperors and dictators, revolutionaries and everyday laborers.”

MARIELA GRIFFOR was born in the city of Concepcion in southern Chile. She attended the University of Santiago and the Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro. She left Chile for an involuntary exile in Sweden in 1985. She and her American husband returned to the United States in 1998 with their two daughters. They live in Grosse Pointe Park, Michigan. She is co-founder of The Institute for Creative Writers at Wayne State University and Publisher of Marick Press. Her work has appeared in periodicals across Latin America and the United States. Mariela Holds a B.A in Journalism and a M.F.A. in Creative Writing from New England College. She is the author of Exiliana (Luna Publications) and House (Mayapple Press).She is Honorary Consul of Chile in Michigan.

STEPHANIE PAPA is a poet and translator living Paris, France. She has an MFA in Poetry from the Pan European program. She is poetry co-editor of Paris Lit Up magazine. Her work has been published in World Literature Today, NOON, great weather for media, Four Chambers Press, Literary Bohemian, Rumpus, Cleaver Magazine, Cerise Press, The Prose Poetry Project and more. She organizes anglophone writing workshops in Paris.
