Round Table Discussion: Social Literature – Writing Beyond the Author

In 1970 Michel Foucault maintained that the concept of Author should be surpassed and that in order better understand literature “it is a matter of depriving the subject (or its substitute) of its role as originator, and of analyzing the subject as a variable and complex function of discourse.” Barthes ethos this sentiment in his Death of the Author when he says “a text consists of multiple writings, issuing from several cultures and entering into dialogue with each other, into parody, into contestation; but there is one place where this multiplicity is collected, united, and this place is not the author.” It is from this starting point that we propose an open discussion about writing and literature today. Departing from the Author, what approaches to literary production are possible today? Which socio-literary practices can lead to a wider vision of what it means to be a contemporary writer? Featuring: Luca Zuliani (Università di Padova), Movement for the Emancipation of Poetry, Jason Francis Mc Gimsey (Paris Lit Up). Moderator: Vincenzo Romania (Università di Padova)
