Join us every Saturday at the bar La Chope des Compagnons from 17h-19h

Creative Writing Workshop

It has long been part of Paris Lit Up’s mission statement to provide a space for writers, seasoned and emerging alike, to develop their artistic craft, discuss ways to improve it, and listen to and be inspired by their peers. Since April 2022 Paris Lit Up has been hosting writers at the cosy, Parisian bar, La Chope des Compagnons, where we rent a room upstairs. Here we share our work in a peaceful and luminous environment, watching the Seine move from the open windows.

The workshop, called The Right Bank Writers Group, meet every Saturday from 17h-19h. The fee to enter is what we in France call “Prix Libre” which means you give what you can (we suggest 5 euros), but the bar is cheap and serves delicious, natural wines. We rotate between reading and workshopping our pieces to writing and experimenting with writing exercises.

Translation workshop

On the last Saturday of the month the writing workshop turns into a translation workshop. The PLU Translation Jam is a workshop where we delve into the magic and intricacies of languages and translation, in French and English. We gather on the last Saturday of the month at 17h at Chope de Compagnons to discuss translation and do writing exercises that explore the space between these two languages.

Each jam will start with a quick, fun writing exercise to get juices flowing. Then, we will read and discuss a short piece of translation theory to give background on the practice and draw inspiration from other writers. Finally, we will finish with a translation exercise, during which we will collectively translate an excerpt of a text by a contemporary author.

This workshop is open to everyone and requires neither background in translation nor perfect fluency in French or English. The goal is to have fun with words in both languages.

PLU Workshops run from September until July, with a two month break over the summer. Feel free to reach out to us at info@parislitup.com with any questions or ideas for collaborations.
